Patients with skeletal defects (i.e. improper relation of jaws) are often treated surgically following a preparation by an orthodontist.
The factors determining a method of treatment (conservative or surgical) include defect intensity and patient expectations. The role of an orthodontist before an operation is the so-called decompensation of defect, which is a proper positioning of teeth that enables a surgeon to properly move jawbones and achieve an optimal aesthetic and functional effect. After the procedure an orthodontist brings teeth to an ideal position against one another in the new occlusal relation.
